Our work with young people

From our very humble beginnings, young people have been at the heart of our work to create a new kind of community in King's Cross and beyond. 11 years later and as all the remaining new buildings go up and lots of new people come into the area, this is just as true as ever.

We were delighted to be shortlisted for the Building Sustainable Communities category at the Sustainable City Awards this month - something we've been able to achieve only with the collaboration of young people, local residents and all the businesses around us.

It was great to hear this in the month during which we've been very busy with lots of activities on our youth programmes, with Generators and BTEC students working together with others in the King's Cross community.

We kicked March off with Generators being brilliant hosts at the culmination of our Heritage Lottery funded project, Stories for a Better World.

They continued to share their knowledge and experience with business employees and members of the first Honey Club event of the year (see blog link here) and a Universe Story dinner at the Skip Garden.

Accompanied by our girls only Generator group, we went down to LIFT in Angel to look after its planters and raised beds, wedding them and then leaving some potatoes and Jerusalem artichokes to grow near the fruit trees in the Secret Garden.

We also welcomed a new group of our youngest Generators - who, led by Paul, quickly picked up some new gardening skills alongside Karmarama employees Joe and Sophie, planting up wild strawberries, thyme and lemon thyme near all our Skip Garden apple trees.

Our BTEC students have also been busy with exams and planning for their next business selling events. Wolff Olins very kindly hosted them recently, where Designer Ben and Strategist Ben shared their experience of how the agency works with brands, and gave the students invaluable advice on how to brand their own micro-businesses, as well as a bit of career guidance.

As spring comes into its own and we prepare to welcome Youth Programme Co- facilitator Silvia's new baby girl and all the blooms whilst setting up our new site, we're also looking forward to bringing together our Generators and students with Zone, Dishoom and Karmarama over the coming season.
