Since my first week at Global Generation in December 2012, we’ve had annual winter markets in the Skip Garden, featuring different micro-enterprises set up and run by our Business & Sustainability BTEC students from Regent High School. The markets have always featured an array of impressive, natural products made by the students themselves, but none more so than this winter's - writes Rachel SolomonRead More
Friday Night Out is our partnership project, funded by Islington Giving, Argent and the Arsenal Foundation. It was set up to provide children and young people in the local area the opportunity to play sports on the King’s Cross pitch coached by Arsenal in the Community, and then, on a fortnightly basis, to learn cooking and healthy eating skills with us at the Skip Garden. By doing so, Friday Night Out supports children and young people to develop healthier attitudes to food and exercise, enabling them to build their skills as well as their confidence and sense of ownership for the decisions they make, particularly about the foods they choose to eat and the activities they participate in.Read More
Eurostar - one of our business partners in King’s Cross, and a key member of the local business community - is working with us again this year to offer our young people work experience focused on customer service.
The week-long placement gives our young people a complete overview of Eurostar and includes seeing behind the scenes at St Pancras International, looking after customers, experiencing life in head office, working with sales and traveller care at Eurostar’s contact centre in Ashford, getting their hands on the Eurostar train simulator, and – always the highlight – shadowing a train driver on a Eurostar journey.Read More
Well, it has been a busy couple of months in the Skip Garden Kitchen, writes Head Chef Andrew Isherwood. In the middle of September we took the decision to refurbish the kitchen as it wasn’t able to cope anymore with the demands that were being placed upon it. Originally designed to cook staff food and cater to the occasional workshop, the constant stream of events and bookings meant that the kitchen was groaning under the pressure.Read More
On the evening of October 22, we celebrated the closing of our successful Twilight Gardening project, a project that we have been running for years and we opened for a new season last spring, writes Silvia Pedretti.
Every other Wednesday regular and newcomers, from local and non-local areas, joined us at the Kings Cross Skip Garden throughout spring, summer and autumn, feeding us and the garden with their knowledge, enthusiasm and love for the community.Read More
One of the pleasures of working as Community Engagement Officer is having the opportunity to design projects that bring the values of the Skip Garden to the wider community, writes Ciara Wilkinson.
As the development continues, we find ourselves closer to residential buildings, and we have been keen for some time to begin engaging with those residents who pass the garden by every day, but who have never, or rarely, ventured inside it.Read More
As I feel the wind on my skin and the sun warming up my face in the middle of London, I am brought back to my spot on the mountains in the Pyrenees a week ago, where I did a 24-hour solo… a day and a night on my own in one spot, to just simply be with nature, writes Nicole van den Eijnde.
When the opportunity arose to go onto a wilderness retreat in the Pyrenees with Way of Nature and Active Earth I knew I had to go. A big part of what we have been doing with Global Generation in our Engaged Philosophy sessions, yoga and sitting still practice is to open up a space inside of us to just ‘be’ and in such a way connecting more deeply with who we are and the world around us. This would take me further on this adventure …Read More
