2008 Pertwood Organic Farm Youth Camps

June 2008 Camp

Participants: Haverstock Secondary School ages 14 – 15

Location:  Pertwood Organic Farm, Wiltshire

Dates: Friday 20th June – Sunday 22nd June 2008

Project Details: The Haverstock Secondary School young male’s camp was a significant success. There were a total of seven (7) young males from a diverse mix of nationalities, cultural, religious and ethnic backgrounds. In fact, of the seven participants, there was only one youth from British origin!

The young men gave such positive feedback of their experiences which was coupled with great enthusiasm and positive attitudes and immaculate behaviour during the camping weekend. They participated in multiple activities including, raw food preparation, cooking, sowing seeds, learning to identify various edible plants,  transferring potted plants to vegetable allotment, construction of planting panels, learning to light and maintain an outdoor camp fire. August 2008 Camp

Participants: Somali Families Meeting Point ages 9 – 18

Location:  Pertwood Organic Farm, Wiltshire

Dates: Friday 1st August  – Sunday 3rd August 2008

Project Details:

The Pertwood Camp organised by GLOBAL GENERATiON in collaboration with the Somali Families Meeting Point voluntary group is the first camp of its kind undertaken by our charity. The group consisted of thirteen (13) young girls from Somalian origins following the Islamic faith. The group was accompanied by seven (7) adults of which two (2) were from Somalian origins, two from Caribbean origins and three (3) British. This combination of mix cultures provided ideal conditions for sharing culture based stories and experiences over the three day period. Sleeping in the outdoors proved to be a challenge for most of the girls as pointed out by Najmo:

“When we arrived I was anxious about the whole trip. Knowing that we would be sleeping in tents terrified me because I knew there would be loads of spiders... Finally the moment I was dreading was here, Night (laugh out loud). We checked the tent for spiders but after that I forgot all about it and was more worried about getting up for the toilet! Waking up was different, heard the birds singing and realised I had slept well”.
