This was the year that a number of our long cherished dreams came to fruition, in large part through the interest and creativity of our young Generators and the generous support of our business collaborators. It was a big year for all things food related, writes Jane Riddiford

Two of the Generators Melanie and Gabrielle dreamed up the idea of having a Skip Garden cafe over a number of weekends in the Summer. With the support of a mentor from Herbert Smith Freehills LLP a business plan was drawn up and a funding pitch prepared. About the same time, Argent the King’s Cross developers offered to support us to create a food selling hatch that faced out into the public domain behind the Skip Garden which enabled us to keep the kitchen running and food selling during the week. Branding agency Karmarama worked with the Generators to create the identity and marketing materials for the cafe ... laid back and local.

As Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry wrote, “There is a deep pull within us to discover and be true to the fact of our own interrelatedness.“ We experienced a new kind of togetherness in 2012 when we moved the Skip Garden, the Hoop Garden and our office onto our current location, writes Jane Riddford.

Bringing the different parts of the organisation together enabled us to see and experience ourselves more clearly as an ecosystem. A big factor in enabling closer collaboration was the fact that for the first time we had a kitchen on site. This meant that we began to regularly sit down as a whole team, to share a cooked lunch together.

This was the year Global Generation teamed up with Branding Agency Wolff Olins and Urban Bees to form the Honey Club, an initiative that has enabled us to involve young people and local business employees in the intricate and mysterious world of bees writes Jane Riddiford.

I am taken back to a hot Friday afternoon; Brian our beekeeper and four of us spend several hours lifting frames out of the hives on the rooftop Wolff Olins Office building looking for the blue dotted queen. The bees are quiet, the smell is delicious – too delicious? Lots of honey is being made, good stores for the winter but alas it has come in such quantity because there is no brood – no eggs.

I think it is fair to say that to date the strongest elements of Global Generation’s work have revealed themselves through a process of hands-on doing, rather than any form of organised strategic plan. It is the things that have created a spark within and between people that have held our interest, enabling us to shape them into a formalised stream of work. Our venture into the world of enterprise is an example of this, writes Jane Riddiford.

The next phase of Global Generation’s journey took us from Rooftops to Skips on Developers Land. How did we end up as an integral part of one of the biggest regeneration sites in Europe, all 67 acres of it? Writes Jane Riddiford.

In large part it is thanks to the fact that Roger Madelin (pictured below), CEO of Argent, developers of the site, and those who work with him, like Anna Strongman, were willing to give us a chance.

Roger visited us at The Office Group roof back in 2006. Arriving in his trademark cycling outfit, he liked the fact that GG was, as he put it, demonstrating that Business and Activism didn’t have to be either end of the spectrum.

One of the many times Global Generation has experienced a challenge turning to an opportunity was in 2007. Thanks to the summer drought in the previous year that nearly devastated our first London project - a garden on the roof of The Office Group’s building in King’s Cross - we found ways to bring water to support the growth of wild flowers and food crops, writes Jane Riddiford.

A random phone call led to a series of meetings with Thames Water and a success with the Lottery fund provided us with enough financial and people resources to save more water than we actually needed.

Indie Farmer is a new online magazine launched in March 2014 "bringing you inspirational stories about independent farming and artisan food culture."

And one of the first London projects they visited was the Kings Cross Skip Garden. They interviewed Paul Richens, the skip garden’s creator and head gardener about how it all came about. Revisiting Global Generation’s History - 2006

2006 was a landmark year. Thanks to funding from the City Bridge Trust, Global Generation took on our first group of young generators (14 – 18 year old youth leaders). Since then the Generators have provided the backbone for much of Global Generation’s work writes Jane Riddiford.

We wanted the Generators to experience that in unity between different sectors of society, e.g. business and young people there is creativity and strength. We aimed to give them practical opportunities to demonstrate with their own passion that it is “cool to care.”

Whilst digging up saplings for a tree planting project down at Pertwood Farm back in 2005 I started imagining how we could bring the Pertwood experience to London. Our first real opportunity was thanks to Charlie Green; director of The Office Group, provider of office spaces for small businesses in central London, writes Jane Riddiford.

When we met Charlie he had recently purchased an Office Building on Grays Inn Road in Kings Cross. It had a flat roof and he had a sense that something special could happen there, although he didn’t know what.
