The Universe Story in Portugal

The Universe Story in Portugal

Jane and Rod returned last week from leading 3 workshops on the Universe Story in Portugal.  It was an exciting and rewarding time exploring and interpreting our 14 billion year story with teachers and parents in Portugal. We visited Viano do Castelo, Porto and Lisbon.

Our first workshop, at Viano do Castelo, was held at a Secondary school. First thing in the morning our good friend and host Teresa, set up the room, meanwhile Jane and I stepped outside to pace out 1000 steps up a nearby hill.  Stopping at the end of a road we claimed this point as the Big Bang!

Sharing Artful and Reflective Practice with Islington Youth Workers

Sharing Artful and Reflective Practice with Islington Youth Workers

Some years ago the Youth Team at Islington Council who have been the main funder for our Generator programme, started noticing the words of young people appearing in our funding reports. They were curious. What were the experiences that led to the vulnerability, creativity and sense of purpose they felt in the writing? This led to a six month commission to share our practice with Islington Youth Workers, writes Jane Riddiford.

Revisiting Global Generation’s History - 2012

Revisiting Global Generation’s History - 2012

As Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry wrote, “There is a deep pull within us to discover and be true to the fact of our own interrelatedness.“ We experienced a new kind of togetherness in 2012 when we moved the Skip Garden, the Hoop Garden and our office onto our current location, writes Jane Riddford.

Bringing the different parts of the organisation together enabled us to see and experience ourselves more clearly as an ecosystem. A big factor in enabling closer collaboration was the fact that for the first time we had a kitchen on site. This meant that we began to regularly sit down as a whole team, to share a cooked lunch together.

Completing our Universe Story Year with St Johns

Completing our Universe Story Year with St Johns

After 12 months of travelling through the journey of the universe with children and teachers from St John’s Primary School in Wallingford it was natural to finish with our responsibility for the future. To do this we chose to tell the story of the bees, writes Jane Riddiford.

During the morning assembly we learnt about the earliest bees who inhabited our planet 130 million years ago and now like the canary in the mine, bees are telling us we need to start paying attention to them and all of life on earth.

Stories for a Better World

Stories for a Better World

Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, Global Generation are exploring a new (and at the same time, very old!) project. We have been working with the Universe Story for quite some time now and are now bringing it to life in a different way, writes project assistant Raiesa Choudury.

'Stories for a Better World' encompasses traditional creation myths alongside the Universe story, using the plight of the bees as an ignition for the project.

Journeying into the Universe with Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim

This month Global Generation had the honour of hosting Mary Evelyn Tucker and John Grim in the Kings Cross Skip Garden. As well as being professors at Yale’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies they are co-producers, with Brian Swimme. of the film "Journey of the Universe" which has had a big influence on Global Generation’s work. writes Jane Riddiford.

Think Even Bigger

Think Even Bigger

Some weeks ago, I was asked to run a workshop for Islington youth workers on our reflective methodologies – ways of working which support the growth of a different perspective, a bigger perspective, writes Jane Riddiford.

Maria, one of our Generators who is part of the Global Generation Big Bang Ambassador group, volunteered to run the workshop with me. It was the end of a long day and at first my mind was blank; what were we going to offer? How would it land?

Unlocking the Power of Creation Stories

Unlocking the Power of Creation Stories

Over the last few weeks the Big Bang Ambassadors have been looking at creation stories from different religions and cultures. What we have been discovering is that these stories have profoundly shaped peoples' ideas about themselves, others and the world around them, writes Rod Sugden

We have discovered that creation stories can still powerfully influence our lives and the directions we choose to follow. This is what the GG Big Bang Ambassadors, (a group of 14 - 16 year old's) have to say about their experience...
